Federal Home Improvement Tax Credits For Windows And Doors

Tax Year 2009 And 2010

On February 17,2009, President Obama signed a stimulus bill that made some significant changes to the energy effiency tax credits. The highlights are:

  1. Federal home improvement tax credits that were previously effective for 2009 have been extended to 2010 as well.
  2. The tax credit has been raised from 10% to 30%, up to $1,500.
  3. The tax credits that were for a specific dollar amount have been converted to 30% of cost of materials.
  4. The maximum credit has been raised from $500 to $1,500 for two years (2009 and 2010). The $1,500 is a maximum per homeowner for all improvements combined.
  5. The $200 cap on windows has been removed.
  6. It is our understanding that the tax credit does not include the cost of installation.

There are certain requirements to qualify for the federal home improvement tax credit.

  1. The home improvement must be placed in service from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2010.
  2. The home improvement must be for the taxpayer's principal residence.
  3. For record keeping, the homeowner must save the receipt and Manufacturer Certification Statement, or for windows save the Energy Star label from the new windows as an alernative to the Manufacturer Certification Statement. A Manufacturer Certification Statement will list classes of the exterior window glass and the corresponding test data.
