Federal Home Improvement Tax Credits For Windows And Doors
Tax Year 2010 and 2011On February 17, 2009, President Obama signed a stimulus bill that made some significant changes to the energy efficiency tax credits. This year, in 2011, there are more changes, as follows:
- The new tax credit has been lowered from 30% to 10% (excluding labor).
- The maximum credit has been lowered from $1,500 to $700. The $700 is a maximum per homeowner for all improvements combined.
- There is a $200 cap on windows and a $500 cap on doors.
- It is our understanding that the tax credit does not include the cost of installation.
There are certain requirements to qualify for the federal home improvement tax credit.
- The home improvement must be placed in service from January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2011.
- The home improvement must be for the taxpayer's principal residence.
- For record keeping, the homeowner must save the receipt and Manufacturer Certification Statement, or for windows save the Energy Star label from the new windows as an alternative to the Manufacturer Certification Statement. A Manufacturer Certification Statement will list classes of the exterior window glass and the corresponding test data.
